A jealous boyfriend who attacked a childhood pal he accused on the Jeremy Kyle Show of sleeping with his girlfriend has walked free from court.

Burly Gary Usher, 33, smashed flatmate James Edlin's cheekbone after suspecting he was having an affair with pretty blonde Holly Dacey.

A judge heard how the woman had failed a lie detector test which allegedly also proved that she had also been working as a prostitute.

Lewes Crown Court heard how Mr Edlin finally called police after Usher sent him a text message following the show, telling him: "You will pay for what you have done."

Prosecutor Rachel Beckett told the court the show was first aired on August 27 last year followed by the results of the lie test a week later.

She said: "In this case a lie detector test was undergone by the defendant and her partner at the time - a woman called Holly Dacey.

"Mr Edlin did not go on the show but was contacted by the representatives and said he wanted nothing more to do with the defendant.

"The victim said the show advised him that he had been accused of sleeping with Holly and asked him if he wanted to make a statement.

"He did so and denied ever sleeping with her and said he didn't want any more to do with Gary.

"He said he had been friends with him for 15 years and had been assaulted by him over what he referred to as paranoid thoughts that he was sleeping with his girlfriend.

"That show was aired then there was a further show where the results of the test were aired.

"The test, which has an accuracy rate of about 97%, showed that she had failed and that she had allegedly had an affair with the victim.

"After that show was aired the defendant sent text messages to Edlin saying, 'You will pay for what you have done.'"

"He didn't reply to the messages but was worried because by their tone and what was said. He went to the police because he was scared."

Usher, of North Street, Hastings, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm following the attack at the flat they shared in Long Avenue in Bexhill, on March 4 last year.

The court heard he has previous convictions for possession of class A and B drugs.

Defending, Rebecca Upton said: "It was a bad idea to go on the show, he sought assistance and advice from friends and family and the response from everybody was that he was going mad.

"They told him he was being paranoid and not to be so silly and he is now mortified about the action that he took.

"He felt he needed someone to relay his fears to and confirm to him that he was not going mad."

Judge Guy Anthony gave Usher a nine-month jail sentence suspended for two years and ordered him to do 250 hours' unpaid work.

He told him: "Your perhaps ill-advised decision to go on the Jeremy Kyle Show does not in fact play any part in this case save that your reaction when the live lie detector test was apparently failed by your girlfriend caused the matter to be reported to the police.

"The violence occurred simply because you could or would not accept the denials of everybody else as to what had gone on. You decided to take matters into your own hands."

Usher was also ordered to pay his victim £750 in compensation and £500 court costs. He refused to comment as he left court with his new partner.

Last year a judge accused the Jeremy Kyle Show of a "human form of bear baiting" as he sentenced a man who headbutted his love rival during a recording of the show.

Residents in Croydon reacted with disgust after a police officer featured in a local poster campaign compared them to guests on the Jeremy Kyle show.

Sgt David Deuchar appeared on council posters about police funding, smiling and standing next to the town hall.

But he later wrote on Facebook: “Not sure that being the face of Croydon is something to be proud of. Research indicates all of Jeremy Kyle's guests can trace their roots to the lovely town.”

The comments were spotted by residents before he could delete them.

The Jeremy Kyle show, a daytime ITV talk show, features people confronting relationship problems and issues such as alcohol or drug dependency, which often leads to them becoming distressed.

One district judge described the programme as “human bear-baiting” after guests were involved in a violent incident.

Commenting on Sgt Deuchar's remarks, shopworker Kez Lewis, 19, said: “There are a lot of cool people in Croydon. Police officers need to be positive, not negative, about where they work. Someone in his position needs to be more careful than that.”

Resident Rita Saglam, 66, said: “I'm surprised because he looks very proud in the photos. He looks like a proper copper, like Pc Tony Stamp in The Bill. He shouldn't say things like that.”

Borough commander Chief Superintendent Adrian Roberts apologised for the gaffe. He said: “These comments are unfortunate from a valued officer. He assured me his comments do not reflect his true feelings. He is very sorry and I apologise on his behalf."

Crime in Croydon fell by one per cent over the year to May. Burglaries were down by slightly more than nine per cent, and most serious crimes fell by nearly a quarter.
